As a wrap of our Super Resume Clinic, I have compiled here the feedback that was shared on our Instagram and Facebook pages.

Common Resume  Mistakes

1. Objectives: An example is “a seasoned Project Manager seeking a more challenging position…” This is stating the obvious which can be annoying. You cannot be applying as a Dentist if the job description says Project Manager. Exceptions may apply where a brief summary might be helpful. For instance, a brief summary may be necessary for a new granduate with no work experience or for a new career/industry/field. Essentially, this should summarize who you are and what you are looking for.

2. Personal information: Your marital status, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, age etc. are irrelevant to the job. This is a capital NO.

3. Photo: a photo of you should NEVER be part of your resume unless you are applying for a date and not a job.

4. Unprofessional email: abs_me@yahoo.com or slaying_chic@hotmail.com may be cute for Victoria Secrete but not for the corporate world. Loose the high school email!

5. GPA: Drop the CGPA after college competitions for it is significantly irrelevant in the real world. What matters is your ability to deliver and the quality of your delivery.

6. List of duties: Most people tend to list their responsibilities instead of their achievements. A job description copied from a job site will only put off employers.

7. Vague expressions: Avoid vague expressions like “I improved the customer experience”. Anybody could claim to have raised the dead without any facts and figures. State clearly the project, the tools, methodologies or strategies you used and the outcome using figures.

These are just a few highlights based on the resumes reviewed. Hope you find it helpful!
